Korean Seesaw
This is one of the amusements enjoyed by women, which also trains and enhances the shape of the
body. Women were forbidden to go outside the walled-in area of the house grounds in those days. On
the 15th of January according to the lunar calendar, Dano festival and Chusok, women dressed them-
selves prettily and gathered around in the garden to jump on the teeterboard. They jumped and sang into
the middle of the night. A traditional seesaw consists of a board 30cm wide and 3m long with rice straw
propped up in the middle at around 15-25cm high. Two people stand on both ends to keep balance and
hop on the board in turn. Special actions, such as jumping high in midair and spinning, can be performed
with the strength coming from the person on the opposite end.
Further records show that women jumped to the
height of the wall to see their husband inside a jail.
It also shows that women jumped high on the
seesaw to take a peek at the outside world in times
where women were strictly forbidden to go
outside. The seesaw performing troop of the
Korean Folk Village consists of compatriots of
ethnic Koreans residing in the Yanbian region of
China. They perform twice daily. Their performance
consists of music and various movements such as
somersaults, ring throwing, fan dance, etc.
