Traditional Marketplace
The history of the market goes back to the Shilla Dynasty. The marketplace in the Chosun Dynasty first
opened in Seoul in the 15th century and following the usage of the currency, the number of market sites
surged to 1,000. By the end of the 19th century, the number of the market increased to around 1,600. As the
marketplace was set up every five days, people exchanged farm products from the farming community for
artifacts from craftsman. Also, products from the mountainsides, grains, and marine products from the
fishing community were traded. In those days, peddlers played an important role in trade. In addition,
the marketplace also served as a place to promote new cultures and exchange information
